We’re just one day away from the income tax filing deadline, and I’m thinking about rebates. This year single folks will get $300 to $600 back from the government, and married couples will get between $600 and $1,200! Whether you plan to pay off some debt, funnel it into your retirement plan, or pick up the latest couture handbag, your tax rebate is nothing to sneeze at.
This year the IRS got on the viral video bandwagon and created four public service announcements to help taxpayers learn more about the tax rebate. The videos are available on
YouTube, where you can also find clips of Q&As with IRS reps and other commentary.
If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, let me offer you a few sage words of advice:
If you or your spouse owes back child support, taxes, or alimony, you may have to kiss those new slingbacks goodbye. The state will capture any refund in an effort to pay down the debt, and if you really do owe the money, don’t count on the rebate.
However, if you are close to paying your back taxes off or are about to clear up any child support issues, it may be your best interest to file an extension on April 15th and wait until the issue is resolved. You may just get that rebate check after all. Just remember to seek professional advice so that all of your ducks are in a very nice, organized row.
